NPS LAB REPORT FORMAT

TITLE

I. PURPOSE:
In a sentence, state the problem. WHY is the experiment being performed? What will we learn?

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
In 1-2 paragraphs, define and explain key words or concepts that must be understood in order to comprehend the experiment and its outcomes. Discuss what is already known about the topic either from reading, research, or class discussions.

III. HYPOTHESIS:
In a sentence, state the predicted result of the experiment. Include the variables which will be in place during the experiment and how they will affect the outcome.(effects) What do you propose will happen?

IV. MATERIALS:
List ALL the items necessary to carry out the experiment.
(Trait = ORGANIZATION)

V. PROCEDURE:
List the numbered steps taken in sequential order during the experiment. Use specific, scientific language when telling what happens at each step. Use transition words to clarify WHEN something is done.

VI. OBSERVATIONS/RESULTS:
Describe what you observed during the experiment. Use charts, diagrams, graphs, tables, etc. to show data.

VII. CONCLUSION:
Restate the hypothesis and state whether it was proven correct or incorrect. Justify your findings with reasons and explanations based on scientific observation. Be sure to reflect on WHY things happened and include this in the final paragraph or two. Tell what we have learned.
