Help Fix Our Schools!

The R.I. Department of Education recently released its State of Rhode Island Schoolhouses report which is the culmination of a year-long assessment commissioned by the School Building Authority.

The report forecasts $627.5 million in high-priority construction and repairs needed to keep students and teachers warm, safe and dry in their classrooms. Unfortunately, every school district in Rhode Island has at least one building that doesn't meet a minimum 'warm, safe and dry' standard. The statewide cost to bring all school buildings into ideal condition is estimated at $2.2 billion.

In response to the report, the Rhode Island School Building Task Force, chaired by General Treasurer Magaziner and Education Commissioner Wagner, met with educators, students and parents across the state, to develop an action plan that includes potential funding streams and recommendations on how to effectively maximize resources.

In December, the Task Force released a plan to make a once-in-a-generation investment in public schools throughout the state. To encourage school districts to embark on more school repair and construction projects, the Task Force recommends a system of targeted increases to the state's share of school construction projects, prioritizing projects to improve the safety, 21st century learning environments and operational efficiency of schools.
